One of Lake County's oldest communities and its first county seat, Libertyville was incorporated in 1882. Major employers include Motorola, Condell Medical Center, and the Solar Corp.

Recreation
The Des Plaines River, winding along the eastern edge of the village, and three lakes within the village limits offer water recreation opportunities. Over 500 acres of village-owned parks and over 100 acres of Libertyville Township Open Space are also available. Other community facilities include The David Adler Cultural Center and Cook Mansion.
