Third Lake was incorporated in 1959.
Recreation
Third Lake has two lakes - Druce Lake and Third Lake - which are used for fishing, boating, swimming and skating. There are a number of public golf courses nearby.
Schools
Third Lake is split between two elementary school districts: Community Consolidated School District #46, which has an enrollment of 2,707, and Woodland District #50, with an enrollment of 5,349 students. Most of the village is within Grayslake High School District #127, which has an enrollment of 1,388 students. A small portion of the village lies within Warren Township High School District #121, which has an enrollment of 2,603 students. There are several parochial schools in the village of Grayslake and Warren Township.
