Lake County, 30 miles NW of the Loop. W. D. Coon and Theodore Mills
established the foundation of this community when they started a two-hundred-acre farm in 1851.
In 1885 railroad tracks were laid, enabling farmers to move their crops via the Soo Line Railroad.

The Village of Vernon Hills was incorporated in 1958. Major employers include Motorola, Zebra Technologies, J&L Oil, VFP Fire Systems, and ZF Industries.
Recreation
Vernon Hills is endowed with outstanding recreational and community facilities. The Vernon Hills Park District operates 16 parks scattered throughout the community including neighborhood tot lots, athletic complexes, native areas and a community/aquatic center. The village operates a 9 hole golf course, tennis courts, an ice rink and the Arbortheater. The area also has miles of award winning bike paths and adjacent forest preserves.
Schools
The village is served by three elementary school districts including Hawthorn District #73, Diamond Lake Intermediate District #76, and Daniel Wright Middle School District #103. Most elementary students attend Hawthorn District #73 with 3,521 students. Most Vernon Hills students attend Libertyville Community District #128 which has two high schools within its district, Libertyville High School with 1,893 students and Vernon Hills High School with 756 students.

Commuter rail service is available on the Metra Wisconsin Central Line. The train station is located at Rt. 45 and Ranney Blvd. Bus service is provided by Pace.
